International expert in the causes and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders
CARLOS BLANCO
I am a Columbia-trained, board-certified psychiatrist specializing in psychopharmacology and talk therapy and one of the 0.1 % of American psychiatrists elected members of the National Academy of Medicine. I approach every patient as an individual with their own unique thoughts, feelings and traits and work in a collaborative way to identify and achieve your individual goals. I am an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, gambling disorder and in the treatment of psychiatric disorders in breast cancer survivors.
My treatments draw on proven psychotherapies, including supportive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). I also prescribe medications when necessary either alone or in combination with psychotherapy.
I completed my psychiatry residency at Columbia University. Before I was recruited in 2015 to National Institutes of Health, I was a Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Columbia University Medical Center, where I developed new treatments, and taught medical students, psychiatry residents and junior faculty.
I have over 25 years of experience treating patients from around the world. I have appeared in major television networks, and I am often cited in scientific publications. I continue to conduct research with colleagues from the National Institutes of Health and multiple universities in the US and Europe to improve the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
I am licensed and currently offering virtual care in New York State, New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Each person is unique, and I want to take the time to get to know you. An initial consultation is generally a 55-60 minute session. During this initial consultation, I will be gathering information about current and past issues that lead to stress or other current symptoms. At the end of the evaluation, a plan for treatment we will discuss. In rare cases, more than one meeting is needed to determine a plan for treatment. Once we agree on a plan, follow sessions are typically 30 minute sessions. For treatments focused on talk therapy or combination of talk therapy and medication, frequency of sessions is typically once a week. Treatments focused exclusively on medication can occur less frequently

Medication is not always necessary, but in many cases, medication can be very effective in helping patients achieve their treatment goals. After the evaluation process, we will discuss a plan that may include no medication, continuing current medications, or starting new medications. If medications are necessary, I am generally able to prescribe them at the end of the initial consultation.

I have years of clinical experience conducting research on and providing various modalities of talk therapy. I will work collaboratively with you to help you to identify the approach that might best adapt to your needs and help achieve your treatment goals.
All sessions take place by secure video conference. Call, text, or email me if you would like to learn more.
